CAD – CAM, acronyms of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing, are special programs that process digital molds and create the final mold for the construction of braces.
Processing is crucial for controlling the precision of the dimensions of the digitized surface of the body and the correct digital interpretation of the model depends on this.
At SPONDYLOS Laser Spine Lab, we process the received mold through a hand-held Laser scanner via these special CAD and CAM programs.
In the CAD programs, there is the option of inserting photographs and x-rays to elaborate the digital molds. This gives a great accuracy.
Depending on the brace we wish to manufacture, the necessary corrections are made, the digital mold is processed, as if we had a plaster mold in front of us and needed to correct it.
With the special tool program, we can, depending on what we want to achieve, correct the humps of the body and press in particular areas for overcorrection , we can also create areas of distension for these pressures so that the brace does not press symmetrically and constricting the patient’s body.
We can also align the shoulders and correct the possible deviation of the pelvis. Generally we are given all the digital tools to create an ideal mold without technical errors that will be used for the construction of the brace.
The digital mold finally takes the form required, in order to be processed by CAΜ (Computer Aided Manufacturing), which in turn will prepare the final digital mold to be processed in the Carver, the digital pantograph, which will cut out the mold from a polyurethane block.Carver [which is a C.N.C. (Computerized Numerical Control), i.e. a kind of pantograph], to be used for the carving of the final mold.
In Scoliosis, wherein the correction of the deformations of the spine is a very serious matter, the proper imaging and correction will result in construction of a suitable brace actually correct the scoliosis and thereby removing a large and painful surgery, such as Spine Fusion.
